Eddie was taken from us far too soon, in the early 1980s, as a result of a car accident while returning to Durban from a cricket match in Zululand. Eddie (how he hated that nickname - he just wanted to be called "John") was one of my best mates in Blackmore's house from the very start of my first year. A guy of great intellectual and athletic ability, he never allowed his abilities to go to his head. He was a practising CA at the time of his death.

I still have vivid memories of playing wicketkeeper to Eddie's legbreaks and googlies in U14 cricket. He was a real character and a lot of fun to be around!

I remember as if it were yesterday, Eddie driving a poor teacher (name forgotten, but he did speak with a broad Irish brogue) incoherent when he told him "We can't understand you Sir, you're talking Irish." Eddie had a style uniquely Eddie, and it was impossible not to like him.
